China’s State Grid has deployed robotic electricians across 26 provinces to work on live high-voltage power lines. The machines operate on energised 10,000-volt lines while the electricity remains on.

According to reports circulating on social media, the robots strip insulation, tighten connections and splice wires with millimetre precision. They are described as 50 per cent faster than human crews and achieve a 98 per cent success rate.

The deployment is presented as part of a broader effort to scale robotic systems within China’s power grid. The technology is intended to reduce the need for human workers to perform some of the most hazardous tasks associated with live-line maintenance.

Commentators have noted that the robots are typically remotely operated by skilled technicians on the ground rather than fully autonomous. This allows workers to service the lines without climbing poles or approaching the live current directly.

The development comes at a time when other countries, including the United States, face shortages of qualified electricians. Proponents argue that such systems can improve both safety and efficiency in power network maintenance.

State Grid is China’s largest utility and one of the world’s biggest electricity providers. Expanding the use of specialised robots for high-voltage work forms part of its modernisation programme.

Precise technical specifications, total numbers of units deployed and long-term performance data were not detailed in the initial reports. The core claim centres on the ability of the machines to perform key maintenance tasks on live lines.

Safety remains a central consideration. Live-line work has traditionally carried high risk for human crews. Remote or robotic assistance is designed to reduce that exposure while maintaining service continuity.

As the technology is scaled, further independent verification of speed and success-rate claims is expected. The current deployment across multiple provinces indicates operational use rather than limited pilot trials.

Power utilities worldwide continue to explore automation for inspection and maintenance. China’s application on 10,000-volt lines represents one of the more advanced examples currently reported.
