The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority board has appointed Nicholas Bodo as Acting Director General following the exit of Emile Arao, whose tenure officially concluded on April 22, 2026.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has initiated a transition at its highest executive level following the departure of Director General Emile Arao. The board confirmed that Mr. Arao’s employment contract officially ended on April 22, 2026, marking the conclusion of his stewardship at the regulatory body.

In a formal statement released on Thursday, KCAA Board Chairperson Brown M.M. Ondego acknowledged the outgoing director’s service. The board noted that the completion of the contract brings to a close a specific chapter for the authority, which oversees the safety and security of the country’s airspace.

To maintain stability, the board, in consultation with the parent ministry, has appointed Nicholas Bodo to serve as the Acting Director General. Mr. Bodo is expected to oversee day-to-day operations while the authority prepares to find a permanent replacement.

Mr. Bodo is a familiar face within the sector, having previously served in acting capacities and as a representative for the State Department for Aviation on the KCAA board. His appointment is intended to provide a steady hand during the transition period.

The board has emphasized that the recruitment of a substantive Director General will be handled through an open and competitive framework. This process will align with established governance procedures to ensure transparency in selecting the next head of the aviation regulator.

Despite the change in leadership, the KCAA has assured the public and industry stakeholders that its operations remain fully functional. The authority stated that it remains committed to its mandate of providing safe and efficient civil aviation services without interruption.

Emile Arao took over the position in 2022, succeeding Gilbert Kibe. His tenure involved navigating various regulatory updates and overseeing the modernization of air navigation services. The board expressed its appreciation for the contributions he made during his three-year term.

The transition comes at a time when the aviation sector continues to be a critical component of the national infrastructure strategy. Ensuring a seamless handover is vital for maintaining international aviation standards and supporting the growth of the regional transport hub.

According to the board, stakeholders should expect no disruption in service delivery. The authority continues to engage with various air service providers and international bodies to uphold the safety protocols governing Kenyan skies.

While the acting appointment takes immediate effect, the timeline for the competitive recruitment process has not yet been detailed. However, the board reiterated that the search for a new leader would be thorough and inclusive of all legal requirements.

The KCAA serves as the primary regulator for the aviation industry in Kenya, responsible for airworthiness, personnel licensing, and air traffic control. The stability of its leadership is seen as a priority for the Ministry of Roads and Transport under the current administration.
