The Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology, known as KIHBT, has announced its first International Research Conference scheduled to take place in Mombasa later this month.
The three-day event will run from May 20 to May 22, 2026. Organizers have selected the Pride Inn Flamingo Beach Resort and Spa as the primary venue for the gathering.
Under the theme "Enhancing Capacity Building and Skills Development for Sustainable Road Transport," the conference aims to address critical gaps in the regional infrastructure sector.
The State Department for Roads, through KIHBT, is positioning this inaugural event as a platform for sharing technical research and practical innovations in highway engineering.
Professional development remains a central pillar of the program. Registered engineers and technical professionals attending the sessions will be eligible for 12 CPD points.
These Continuous Professional Development points are essential for practitioners looking to maintain their licenses and stay current with evolving industry standards in Kenya.
To accommodate a wider audience, the institute has confirmed a hybrid attendance model. This allows participants to join either physically in Mombasa or via a virtual platform.
Registration is currently open through a dedicated portal, conference.kihbt.ac.ke, as the countdown to the event enters its final three weeks.
The pricing structure for the event is as follows:
* Resident Delegates (Physical): KES 45,000
* Non-Resident Delegates (Physical): USD 450
* Student Delegates (Physical): KES 15,000
* Virtual Attendees: KES 10,000 / USD 75
This initiative comes at a time when the Kenyan government is emphasizing the need for locally driven research to solve complex logistical and environmental challenges in road construction.
The East Africa Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project, or EASTRIP, is listed as a key partner in the endeavor.
The collaboration suggests a focus on regional integration, ensuring that road transport standards are harmonized across East African borders to facilitate smoother trade and movement.
As the 19-day countdown begins, the institute expects a significant turnout from both the public and private sectors, including policy-makers, researchers, and contractors.
President Ruto has previously advocated for the enhancement of technical institutions to drive the nationβs Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda through improved infrastructure.
The conference is expected to produce a series of white papers and recommendations that could influence future road design and maintenance protocols across the country.
Mombasa, as a major hub for the Northern Corridor, provides a strategic backdrop for discussions on sustainable transport and the blue economy.
By integrating research with practical skills development, KIHBT intends to bridge the gap between academic findings and the actual demands of the construction site.
Final preparations are underway at the Flamingo Beach Resort to host the delegates, with the institute urging interested parties to complete their registration to secure a spot.
