Mutuini Level IV Hospital Specialised Complex Nears Completion at 94 Percent

Construction of a new specialised medical complex at Mutuini Level IV Hospital in Dagoretti South has reached 94 percent completion. Principal Secretary for Defence Dr Patrick Mariru inspected the site together with Dagoretti South Member of Parliament John Kiarie.

The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Nairobi County Government. It forms part of efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and expand access to specialised services. In line with a presidential directive, the facility remains on course for completion and handover within the next month.

Once finished, the 400-bed complex will include five fully equipped operating theatres, specialised renal, burns and trauma units, an Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, paediatric ward, maternity wing, modern laboratories and a fully equipped pharmacy. Officials say the investment will improve emergency and critical care response and bring quality treatment closer to residents of Dagoretti South and the wider Nairobi metropolitan area.

Also present during the inspection were the hospital chief executive, the local deputy county commissioner, the ward member of the county assembly and representatives from partner institutions. The project reflects a multi-agency approach to expanding public healthcare capacity.

Specialised facilities of this scale are expected to reduce pressure on larger referral hospitals and improve outcomes for patients requiring complex care. The inclusion of dedicated burns, trauma and renal units addresses gaps that often force patients to travel long distances or wait for limited slots at national hospitals.

Defence involvement in healthcare infrastructure has expanded in recent years, drawing on the ministry’s project management and engineering capacity. Collaboration with the Ministry of Health and county government ensures clinical standards and operational readiness align with national health policies.

Nairobi’s rapid population growth continues to strain existing public health facilities. Additional bed capacity and specialised services in Dagoretti South will serve both local residents and patients from surrounding areas. Timely completion depends on final finishing works, medical equipment installation, staff deployment and regulatory commissioning.

The 94 percent progress mark indicates that structural and major building works are largely complete. Remaining tasks typically include interior finishes, mechanical and electrical systems testing, and integration of medical equipment. Close coordination among the implementing partners will be required to meet the one-month handover target.

Successful delivery of the Mutuini complex will demonstrate the value of inter-ministerial collaboration on social infrastructure. It also provides a model for similar specialised facilities planned in other parts of the country.
