Nairobi Official Makes Footbridge Skippers Collect Litter At Nyayo Roundabout

Geoffrey Mosiria, Nairobi County's Head of Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, turned a routine road safety exercise into an impromptu cleanup after catching pedestrians crossing a busy road at Nyayo Stadium Roundabout instead of using the footbridge built for them.

Mosiria stopped several pedestrians taking the shortcut, sat them down and handed them over to traffic officers at the scene, telling them the footbridge was clearly visible but they had chosen a dangerous crossing point anyway.

At one point he stopped a woman crossing while on her phone, asked her to hand it over, and directed her to join others picking up litter along the roadside. Another pedestrian who pleaded for leniency was told to join the group instead, with Mosiria noting he had no authority to decide forgiveness, since that was a matter for a judge.

One man explained he was rushing to see his wife, who had just given birth, and asked to be let through before visiting hours ended. Mosiria dismissed the explanation, telling him the hospital would not close and that being struck by a car while crossing unsafely would prevent him from reaching it at all.

The pedestrians eventually joined the cleanup, collecting litter together as Mosiria continued stopping others attempting to cross rather than use the footbridge. He said the exercise was meant to reinforce that no destination is worth risking a life by crossing a busy road at an unsafe point.

Mosiria described his role as involving public education, awareness creation and citizen engagement across Nairobi, saying his frequent public appearances reflect ongoing efforts to interact directly with residents and address issues affecting them.

The intervention comes as the National Transport and Safety Authority continues broader enforcement campaigns targeting pedestrians who bypass footbridges and designated crossings, part of a wider push to reduce pedestrian-involved road crashes in busy urban areas.
