Tanzanian billionaire Rostam Aziz, through Taarifa Ltd, has reached an agreement to acquire the entire 100 percent shareholding of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development in Nation Media Group.

The Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development S.A. (AKFED) has officially announced an agreement to sell its entire 100 percent shareholding in Nation Media Group PLC (NMG) to Taarifa Ltd. This transaction marks the end of an era for the regional media powerhouse, which has been under the stewardship of the Aga Khan for decades.

Taarifa Ltd is owned by Rostam Aziz, a prominent Tanzanian businessman with a diverse portfolio that spans multiple sectors, including telecommunications, mining, and energy. Aziz has recently increased his footprint in the Kenyan market, notably through significant investments in the energy sector, which includes the construction of large-scale liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage facilities in Mombasa.

The acquisition of NMG, the largest independent media house in East and Central Africa, places Aziz at the helm of a company with significant real estate and infrastructural assets across the region. These assets include printing plants, broadcasting studios, and office complexes that serve as critical hubs for information dissemination in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The shift in ownership comes at a time when the media industry is navigating a transition toward digital-first platforms, which necessitates substantial investment in technological infrastructure and modern newsroom facilities. AKFED, which is the economic development arm of the Aga Khan Development Network, has historically focused on long-term investments that promote economic stability, but this divestment suggests a strategic pivot in its regional portfolio.

Rostam Aziz is no stranger to the media business, having previously held interests in various outlets in Tanzania. His entry into the Kenyan media space through Taarifa Ltd is expected to influence the strategic direction of NMG’s physical and digital operations, particularly as the group seeks to optimize its extensive property holdings.

Construction and real estate sectors in Nairobi have often looked to NMG's corporate developments as indicators of market health. The company’s headquarters and production sites represent significant urban infrastructure that may now undergo refurbishment or modernization under the new ownership.

Details regarding the financial valuation of the deal remain undisclosed, but the transfer of a 100 percent stake indicates a total change in the board's composition and future capital expenditure plans. Industry observers are now watching closely to see how Taarifa Ltd will manage the integration of NMG’s regional subsidiaries, including Mwananchi Communications in Tanzania and Monitor Publications in Uganda.

As the legal and regulatory approvals proceed, the focus remains on the continuity of operations at Nation Centre and the various regional bureaus. The transition is expected to be a multi-phase process, involving the auditing of physical assets and the alignment of corporate governance structures between the Tanzanian-based Taarifa Ltd and the Nairobi-listed media group.
