Bill Gates urges major limits on artificial intelligence development

Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) co-founder Bill Gates warned that artificial intelligence (AI) requires strict boundaries to ensure risks do not outweigh benefits. In a 6,000-word essay titled "The turbulent AI era is here. The choices we make now are critical," he wrote that the technology will either serve as a massive equalizer or become a major driver of injustice.

The transition to advanced systems will present one of the most turbulent periods in human history. Gates noted that global leaders and communities lack an adequate plan to ease entry into this new era. While acknowledging potential breakthroughs in fields like agriculture and medicine, he highlighted dangers involving job losses, child development, and criminal misuse.

During an interview with Cable News Network (CNN), Gates stated that models have grown powerful much faster than anticipated. He pointed out risks related to cyberattacks, bioterrorism, and psychosocial harms. He expressed surprise that specific evaluation criteria and harm-mitigation actions remain absent across the sector.

To address labor market displacement, Gates suggested imposing payroll taxes on AI or robotics, mirroring taxes paid for human employees. He also advocated reserving specific job categories exclusively for human labor. He noted that economic and geopolitical incentives currently push organizations to advance without slowing down.

Gates urged policymakers to act quickly before public trust erodes and economic disruption impacts communities. He emphasized that joint international cooperation will be essential to establish guidelines and ensure broad societal benefits.
