Seven individuals died and over thirty sustained severe injuries after a matatu carrying a dowry party rolled in Makueni.

At least seven people have died and more than thirty others sustained severe injuries following a road crash in Ikangavya Sub-location along the Emali to Ukia road in Makueni County.

The incident involved a 45-seater Public Service Vehicle (PSV) carrying family members and friends traveling from Nthongoni in Kibwezi East.

The group was heading to Maumba area in Ikangavya to attend a dowry ceremony.

Emergency responders from the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) reported that the vehicle experienced brake failure while descending a steep gradient on the corridor.

The vehicle subsequently lost control and rolled several times off the carriageway.

The injured passengers were evacuated from the scene and transported to regional healthcare centers, including Makueni County Referral Hospital (MCRH) and Matiliku Sub-County Hospital (MSCH), where they are receiving medical treatment.

Local authorities have commenced preliminary investigations into the structural and mechanical factors surrounding the crash, though comprehensive reports regarding the exact sequence of events have not yet been released.
