Six people were killed and three others seriously injured after a lorry crashed into a matatu on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway. The accident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The collision occurred along the busy stretch linking the two Rift Valley towns. Rescue teams rushed to the scene to extract survivors from the wreckage.

The matatu was carrying passengers when the lorry veered into its path. Initial reports suggest the lorry may have lost control or the driver may have been speeding.

Road safety remains a major concern on Kenyan highways. The Nakuru-Eldoret route has seen several serious accidents in recent years often involving heavy commercial vehicles and public service vehicles.

The National Transport and Safety Authority has repeatedly called on drivers to observe speed limits and maintain safe distances especially on long distance routes. Overloading and fatigue continue to contribute to many crashes.

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. The dead were taken to the mortuary as investigations into the exact cause of the crash continue.

This latest accident comes amid ongoing efforts to improve road safety standards across the country. Better enforcement, driver training and vehicle inspection are seen as critical to reducing such incidents.

The Kenya National Highways Authority continues to maintain the Nakuru-Eldoret highway. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution on the route following the tragedy.
