Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has issued a formal directive to the public regarding road safety protocols as traffic volumes rise during the December festive period. Speaking in Nairobi, the Cabinet Secretary emphasized that the ministry has established specialized enforcement centers at various police stations across the nation to monitor compliance with traffic regulations.
The government has prioritized the use of licensed and compliant Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) for those traveling to celebrate with families. This measure aims to address the spike in road incidents often recorded during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Chirchir noted that the safety of all road users is a shared responsibility, calling on transport operators and private drivers to take the lead in maintaining order on the highways.
Motorists and passengers have been urged to cooperate with road safety enforcement officers and personnel from the National Transport and Safety Authority. The ministry’s current strategy includes intensified surveillance to curb common violations such as drunk driving, speeding, and the use of unroadworthy vehicles. Chirchir further encouraged the public to report any observed hazards or traffic violations to the relevant authorities to assist in preventing avoidable accidents.
These directives follow reports of fatal crashes occurring as the holiday travel season began. The ministry continues to coordinate with the National Police Service to facilitate secure travel for all commuters while maintaining a visible presence on major transit corridors.
