Atlanta/Mercedes-Benz Stadium: The Venue With the Roof That Opens Like a Camera Lens Hosting World Cup 2026 Match 13

Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta hosts a Group H fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup today when Spain face Cape Verde. The stadium takes its commercial name from Mercedes-Benz USA, which signed a 27-year naming rights deal in 2015, described at the time as the largest marketing agreement in the company's history.

FIFA strips commercial branding from all host venues during the tournament, so the stadium is known officially as Atlanta Stadium for the competition's duration.

The Vision and Construction

The stadium was commissioned by Arthur Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons, to replace the Georgia Dome. Groundbreaking took place on May 19, 2014, and the stadium opened on August 26, 2017.

The final construction cost reached $1.6 billion (approximately KES 207 billion), up from an initial estimate closer to $1 billion as the design scope expanded during construction. The project added a second tenant, Atlanta United FC, midway through planning.

Design was led by 360 Architecture, a subsidiary of HOK, alongside tvsdesign, Goode Van Slyke, and Stanley Beaman and Sears. BuroHappold Engineering handled structural work, with a four-firm joint venture known as HHRM JV serving as general contractor.

World Cup Debut and International Events

Atlanta Stadium already hosted Super Bowl LIII in 2019 and the 2018 MLS Cup final. The Georgia World Congress Center Authority owns the building, while Blank's AMB Sports and Entertainment Group operates it.

Spain and Cape Verde open the venue's World Cup tournament today in a Group H fixture. Atlanta Stadium also hosts a semifinal later in the competition, on July 15.

Engineering and Design

The stadium's defining feature is its roof, made up of eight translucent triangular Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) panels arranged in a pinwheel pattern around a central oculus. The design was directly inspired by the dome of the Roman Pantheon.

The panels slide open and closed like a camera aperture, supported by a network of more than 200 trusses spanning up to 735 feet (224 metres) across the stadium. A full opening or closing sequence takes between 8 and 12 minutes.

Hoberman Associates, specialists in transformable structures, developed the kinetic roof system alongside HOK. When the panels retract fully, the resulting silhouette has been described as wings folding inward, a nod to the Atlanta Falcons.

Modern Setup for 2026

Atlanta Stadium has a soccer capacity of 42,500, expandable to 71,000, with standing room pushing attendance beyond 73,000 for major events. The current playing surface is FieldTurf CORE, though FIFA's natural grass requirement means a temporary surface has been installed for the tournament.

A 360-degree halo video board is built into the roof structure, giving fans clear sightlines to replays from every seat in the bowl. The stadium sits roughly 90 metres (100 yards) from where the Georgia Dome once stood, imploded in November 2017.

What Makes It Unique

Atlanta Stadium is the only World Cup venue in this tournament whose roof opens through eight independent panels rather than a single sliding or folding mechanism, a design HOK has described as breaking from a decade of similar retractable roof stadiums.

The pinwheel roof remains the building's most photographed feature, drawing comparisons to flower petals, camera apertures, and folded wings, depending on which angle the panels are caught mid-motion.
