SpaceX is planning a new natural gas pipeline project called “Starpipe” to support its Starship launch operations in South Texas. The pipeline is expected to supply fuel directly to the company’s Starbase facility near Boca Chica, where Starship development and testing continue.
The proposed pipeline is part of SpaceX’s effort to improve fuel supply reliability as launch frequency increases. Starship, the company’s fully reusable rocket system, relies on liquid methane and liquid oxygen as propellants, making methane a key part of operations.
According to regulatory filings, Starpipe would transport natural gas from existing regional supply lines to SpaceX’s processing infrastructure at Starbase. Once delivered, the gas would be refined into liquid methane for use in rocket engines.
The project highlights the growing scale of SpaceX’s launch ambitions. Starship is central to the company’s future plans, including missions to deploy large satellite constellations, carry cargo to the Moon, and eventually support human missions to Mars.
As SpaceX pushes for more frequent test flights, securing a stable fuel source has become increasingly important. Trucking in fuel can be costly, slower, and less efficient compared to pipeline transport, especially for a launch program operating at high volume.

For SpaceX, Starpipe may offer a practical solution to support the growing demands of Starship. The company has made clear that Starship is intended to operate at a much larger scale than previous launch systems, requiring significant fuel resources.
