A trailer that reportedly lost its brakes slammed into a Toyota Voxy on the Narok-Mai Mahiu road at Duka Moja, killing all seven occupants on the spot. The accident happened between Ntulele and Duka Moja, roughly 30 kilometres from Narok town, on Saturday afternoon.
Witnesses said the impact was devastating. The trailer struck the smaller vehicle with such force that the Voxy was left badly mangled. Emergency responders reached the scene quickly and began recovery operations as images of the twisted wreckage circulated online.
Traffic came to a standstill along the affected section. The trailer's rear blocked part of the carriageway, forcing motorists into long queues. Authorities urged drivers to slow down, maintain caution near the crash site, and allow recovery teams space to clear the debris.
This section of the Narok-Mai Mahiu road has a grim history of serious accidents. In December 2024, two separate crashes at the same location claimed eight lives in quick succession. A trailer tyre burst caused one vehicle to lose control and hit a Premio, a bus, and a matatu, killing three passengers in the matatu. Soon after, another trailer rammed a Prado and a motorcycle, adding five more deaths.
National Transport and Safety Authority figures show at least 1,100 road deaths occurred nationwide between January and March this year. The agency has announced fresh enforcement measures targeting non-compliant drivers as schools reopen.
Kenya's major highways, including routes linking Nairobi to the Rift Valley and western regions, carry heavy commercial traffic. Trailers and matatus frequently share these roads, and brake failures or burst tyres often feature in official crash reports. The Narok-Mai Mahiu corridor serves as a key artery for goods and passengers heading toward tourist areas and agricultural zones.
No names of the deceased have been released so far. Police have not yet confirmed details about the trailer driver or any possible mechanical issues. Investigations into the exact cause continue.
The latest incident adds to mounting pressure on authorities to address black spots on this route. Local residents and regular users have long complained about poor signage, inadequate shoulders, and the speed at which heavy vehicles descend certain sections.
As clearance work progressed into the evening, traffic officials warned of continued delays. Motorists were advised to seek alternative routes where possible or prepare for slow movement through the area.
May the souls of the victims rest in peace.
