The Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) has organized an exclusive site tour focused on the regeneration of Nairobi's urban river systems. Scheduled for Friday, August 21, 2026, the exercise provides built environment professionals with a firsthand look at field interventions aimed at shifting the city from fragility to resilience.

The professional development event is hosted by the Nairobi Rivers Commission (NRC). Organizers include three specialized groups within the professional association, namely the Architects Chapter, the Town Planners Chapter, and the Landscape Architects Chapter.
Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points will be awarded to participating professional practitioners. Registration fees vary depending on membership status and registration timing, with discounted early bird rates available prior to August 16, 2026. Standard participant rates apply for registrations completed from August 17, 2026 onward.
The initiative connects directly to the broader discussions framed under the AAK Annual Convention 2026, which focuses on shifting built infrastructure toward long-term urban stability. Related activities also link to the upcoming Nairobi Biennale event scheduled for September 2026 at the ASK Showground in Jamhuri Park.
River systems across the capital have faced severe pressure from urban expansion, encroachment, industrial discharge, and inadequate waste management infrastructure. Regeneration efforts seek to restore ecological balance while addressing flood risks and sustainable land management within the river basin.
Architects, urban planners, and landscape designers will examine active restoration sites to evaluate landscape integration, water management strategies, and spatial planning techniques. Participants will engage directly with project leads to review ongoing civil and ecological engineering interventions along the designated river corridors.
Early bird rates for the exercise were set at KES 1,500 for registered members, KES 2,000 for non-members, and KES 1,000 for university students. Standard fees after the early registration window increase to KES 2,000 for members, KES 2,500 for non-members, and KES 1,500 for students.
Professional associations in Kenya regularly conduct field visits to ensure registered practitioners maintain technical competency, while tracking major public and private construction developments. The upcoming tour offers a field-level assessment of how multidisciplinary strategies are applied to urban water infrastructure.
Interested participants can register online via QR code access or coordinate directly with the event secretariat via telephone and email ahead of the field exercise.
