Kenya Airports Authority engages world-renowned DAR for integrated master plans as public debate grows on project execution standards.

The Kenya Airports Authority has engaged DAR to prepare integrated master plans for Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport.

DAR ranks among the top airport design firms globally. It has masterplanned projects including Al Maktoum in Dubai and Hamad International in Doha.

The scope covers long-term aviation demand forecasting over the next 20 years. It includes strategic planning for capacity, connectivity and infrastructure needs.

For JKIA, the plan targets passenger growth beyond 22 million by 2045. It outlines future airfield configurations, terminal expansions and phased delivery of facilities.

The masterplan also covers ground operations, maintenance, cargo and utilities. It proposes an Airport City as a mixed-use development with education, healthcare, retail and hospitality components.

A Special Economic Zone is included as a logistics and business park. It would integrate industrial, warehousing and office functions.

For Wilson Airport, the plan defines future airside and landside development. This includes runway requirements, terminal layouts and transport access strategies.

The overall effort supports a National Airport Systems Plan for air transport infrastructure across Kenya. It aligns with national priorities for economic diversification.

Recent concept designs shared publicly have drawn positive commentary. Observers noted inspiration from the savannah and great migration, with a canopy design that filters daylight in a distinctly Kenyan way.

Public reaction on social media has been largely positive regarding the choice of DAR. Commentators stressed that execution must match the quality of the design work.

The selection of a top global firm has been welcomed by some sections of the public. Questions remain on the next steps, particularly the choice of contractor for actual construction.

JKIA has long operated beyond its original design capacity. A credible masterplan is seen as essential to position Nairobi as a competitive regional aviation hub.
