A technical delegation from the Dangote Group has arrived in East Africa to initiate a comprehensive feasibility study across three proposed port sites, aimed at determining the location for a planned regional petroleum refinery.
The multi-billion-dollar project has drawn active interest from host nations, with Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania all confirming their participation in the regional infrastructure initiative.
According to the latest project projections, the Dangote Group aims to scale the total capacity of the regional refining infrastructure to 2.1 million barrels per day (bpd) by the year 2030.
The visiting team is scheduled to evaluate specific technical, maritime, and logistical parameters at all three proposed coastal locations before compiling their final assessment.
Upon completion of the field assessments, the findings will be formally presented to the leadership of the conglomerate.
It will then be the responsibility of the billionaire industrialist, Aliko Dangote, to select the final site that is deemed most suitable for the regional refinery based on the data his team will present.
The infrastructure project is being designed as a shared facility to process crude oil from regional producers, which currently face high costs due to a heavy reliance on imported refined petroleum products.
The initiative follows recent high-level discussions between regional heads of state, including President William Ruto, who have previously expressed strong support for collaborative energy infrastructure to safeguard supply chains.
The technical evaluation will focus heavily on port depths, marine access, and proximity to existing transport networks, ensuring the selected site can support the massive scale of the proposed facility.
By building substantial refining capacity within the region, the participating countries seek to protect their economies from global supply chain vulnerabilities and volatile fuel prices.
The final decision on the location remains pending until the Dangote Group team concludes its on-the-ground technical inspections and submits its official advisory report.
