Game Changer: Taifa Gas LPG Terminal Nears Completion at Dongo Kundu

The Taifa Gas LPG Terminal at the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone in Mombasa is nearing completion. Developed by Taifa Gas Investment SEZ Limited, the project is led by Tanzanian billionaire Rostam Aziz through the Taifa Group.

The terminal sits on a 30-acre site about four kilometres from the Port of Mombasa. It features 12 spherical storage tanks with an initial combined capacity of 30,000 metric tonnes and provision for expansion to 45,000 tonnes. President William Ruto presided over the groundbreaking in February 2023 as part of efforts to lower the cost of cooking gas for Kenyan households.

Extensive earthworks have transformed the hilly site. Construction of the storage tanks is now complete, with testing underway. Installation of pipelines, electrical systems and instrumentation continues to progress steadily. The facility is expected to become operational in the coming months after regulatory clearances.

The terminal is designed to strengthen Kenya’s LPG supply chain through efficient bulk importation, storage and distribution. It will introduce additional capacity into a market previously dominated by a small number of players. Officials anticipate that greater competition and reduced supply bottlenecks will exert downward pressure on cooking gas prices for households and businesses.

The project has already generated employment opportunities for local communities during construction. Once operational, it is expected to sustain jobs in logistics, distribution and maintenance. The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has supported the effort by helping ensure a secure environment and coordination among agencies responsible for safe handling of LPG.

Kenya has faced persistent challenges with the affordability and availability of cooking gas. The new terminal forms part of a wider strategy that includes expanded infrastructure and private sector investment to address these issues. Its location within the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone offers logistical advantages for handling imports arriving at the port.

The development survived earlier legal challenges from some local residents before proceeding to the current advanced stage. Completion of the Taifa Gas facility is viewed as a significant addition to East Africa’s LPG infrastructure.
