The landscape of sustainable urban development in Kenya is poised for a significant transformation following the announcement of a massive KES 39 billion, by a Canadian firm Concrete Corporation

The firm is set to establish a groundbreaking 'organic city' in the Abakik area of Tana River County, positioning the devolved unit as a major frontier for green, self-sustaining construction and urbanism.

Spanning an initial timeline of 12 years, the comprehensive development plan includes a substantial construction phase aimed at addressing the need for modern, affordable housing. The first phase alone is earmarked for the construction of 25,000 housing units intended for local residents.

This massive residential undertaking forms the core physical structure of the new city, providing not just shelter but also an integrated community environment.

The corporation has indicated plans for continued expansion, conditional on land acquisition and a deepening relationship with the local county government.

Beyond the physical construction of homes, the investment carries a profound socio-economic blueprint for the region. The project is projected to generate approximately 2,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, with a particular focus on empowering local youth and women through job creation and specialised training.

This project blends modern city infrastructure with large-scale organic agriculture, designed to create a harmonious ecosystem that prioritizes environmental conservation alongside robust economic growth.

Tana River’s natural resources and available land mass are increasingly attracting long-term, sustainable investors. The organic city is expected to act as a magnet for further capital inflows across sectors such as renewable energy development and eco-tourism.

Local community representatives have lauded the initiative, expressing profound gratitude for the anticipated economic elevation and skills transfer, noting the provision of training centers that will benefit even those without formal education.
