Engineering crews have positioned the floating spacecraft near shore to conduct detailed assessments before attempting transit back to port facilities.

After spending approximately 24 days drifting and under tow in the Indian Ocean, Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) recovery teams successfully guided a Starship upper stage into sheltered waters off Christmas Island.

Engineering crews are arriving at the site to conduct detailed structural analysis on the 52-meter vehicle in calmer conditions before initiating further transport plans.

The prototype vehicle splashed down in late July following an orbital test flight. While expected to break up upon water impact, the stainless-steel structure remained largely intact and buoyant, prompting emergency marine salvage operations to preserve the hardware.

Towing the craft proved difficult over the three-week operation. Marine support crews navigated high swells, rough seas, and unpredictable ocean currents across hundreds of nautical miles.

Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) deployed specialized tugs and support vessels to stabilize the heavy structure during its transit toward the Australian territory.

Naval authorities and local harbour managers established a 500-meter exclusion zone surrounding the floating rocket and its accompanying fleet to safeguard maritime navigation.

Engineers face significant logistical constraints at the island destination. Local port infrastructure lacks high-capacity heavy-lift cranes and deep-water berths designed to handle massive aerospace hardware.

Technical teams must evaluate whether to attempt a complex shipboard lift or tow the vessel directly across open ocean toward industrial port facilities.

The recovery effort marks the first attempt by Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) to retrieve a full-scale upper stage from open waters.

Data gathered from the salt-exposed hull, thermal protection tiles, and Raptor engines will inform future structural designs and sea-landing contingency plans.
