SpaceX has announced plans to construct an on-site natural gas power plant in Grimes County, Texas. The energy installation will supply electricity to a massive semiconductor manufacturing complex named Terafab.
Project developers confirmed that the chip facility will also incorporate very large battery storage arrays. This self-contained power setup addresses heavy energy demands required for chip fabrication.
The initial phase of the semiconductor complex represents a capital investment of $16.8 billion. Overall investment across future expansion phases could eventually reach $55 billion.
The Texas state government extended a $30 million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) for the development. The effort also qualifies under the state Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation (JETI) program.
Construction work on the site is moving forward immediately to establish initial civil infrastructure. Engineers will soon begin laying heavy concrete foundations for the industrial buildings.
The complete complex will span roughly 100 million square feet across a 3,000-acre footprint. SpaceX controls over 13,000 acres in the surrounding rural area.
The manufacturing site was previously occupied by the former Gibbons Creek power station. Local county commissioners recently approved a property tax abatement package for the project.
The facility aims to produce hardware for Artificial Intelligence (AI) compute capacity. The site will combine logic chip design, memory production, and packaging under one roof.
Tesla and xAI are jointly planning the venture alongside SpaceX. Chipmaker Intel is contributing operational expertise and manufacturing process technology to the project.
SpaceX selected the Texas location due to local logistical advantages and existing industrial infrastructure. The site will generate approximately 3,000 direct jobs for technicians and operators.
Initial prototype operations were focused near Austin, Texas, before full development moved to Grimes County. The facility will manufacture silicon components required for autonomous vehicles and robotics.
To handle water consumption demands, the industrial development will feature integrated water recycling systems. Industrial water treatment equipment will process liquid waste directly on site.
The project consolidates the entire semiconductor production chain into a single facility. This vertical integration model reduces reliance on overseas microchip supply chains.
Local officials expect worker recruitment to draw heavily from nearby Brazos and Grimes counties. Civil contractors are finalizing site preparation plans as heavy machinery arrives.
The on-site natural gas plants will ensure continuous utility delivery during peak regional demand. Battery arrays will store excess electrical energy to smooth out supply fluctuations.
Heavy equipment delivery schedules are currently being coordinated with global machinery suppliers. Plant operations will scale gradually as utility connections and cleanroom structures are finished.
The development represents one of the largest single manufacturing investments in state history. Building crews expect continuous site development over the coming multi-year construction cycle.
