Clearing operations have commenced within sections of the protected Imenti Forest in Meru County, as authorities move to prepare land for the construction of a new State Lodge and associated infrastructure.
Felling of mature trees began under tight security provided by Kenya Forest Service (KFS) rangers, who cordoned off active zones to prevent unauthorized access. The site clearance follows persistent reports that the national executive intends to establish a presidential residence, a golf course, and an airstrip within the gazetted ecosystem.
The physical deployment of personnel to clear trees has amplified an ongoing dispute between conservationists and state officials over the ecological cost of infrastructure development. Local lobby groups and environmental defenders have voiced opposition, citing risks to biodiversity and critical water catchment systems that sustain Meru town and surrounding agricultural zones.
Defending the infrastructure plan, Meru County Governor Mutuma M'Ethinkia stated that the initiatives would proceed as planned, asserting that the construction utilizes public land rather than private holdings. Local leaders supporting the project argue that the executive infrastructure will stimulate economic growth, enhance regional tourism, and provide necessary facilities for high-level government operations.
Conversely, the Imenti Development Forum (IDF) and regional political figures, including former Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, have strongly condemned the clearing. Critics argue that alternative public land exists outside the forest boundaries, pointing out that the excision threatens the fragile Mount Kenya water tower, which is already experiencing diminished river volumes.
The clearing operations proceed amidst a complex regulatory environment, following recent legislative adjustments to the Forest Conservation and Management Act regarding infrastructure easements. With physical site work now active, the project remains a flashpoint for national debates concerning the balance between executive infrastructure expansion and environmental preservation commitments.
