Government Finishes Modern Mwatunge Market Facility in Taita Taveta

The national government has completed the construction of the Mwatunge Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) market in Mwatate, Taita-Taveta County.

Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo highlighted the development under the government's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Construction of the facility started in February 2024 and wrapped up in August 2025. The project aims to stimulate rural trade, provide a structured environment for vendors, and support local small and medium enterprises.

The new complex includes a main market block, an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) hub, public toilets, a dedicated play area, and garbage disposal facilities.

The facility was designed to offer a hygienic, organized trading space for local farmers and small-scale entrepreneurs operating within the county.

The government continues to prioritize rural market developments across various counties under the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP).

Officials expect the new facility to improve market access for surrounding agricultural communities while creating direct and indirect opportunities for trade.

The two-story market building features stone-faced exterior cladding, open trading bays, upper-level walkways, and security perimeter fencing.

Site works included utility connections and dedicated waste management infrastructure tailored for high-volume daily trading activity.

Small-scale traders, farmers, and local vendors are set to transition into the organized spaces provided within the newly completed commercial hub.

The project aligns with broader state efforts to modernize public trading infrastructure and improve commercial node connectivity throughout non-metropolitan regions across the country.
