Kiambu Healthcare Upgrade Moves Closer as Major Facility Completed

Structural work on the main block of the 350-bed Githunguri Level 5 Hospital in Kiambu County has reached completion, advancing state plans to expand medical services and relieve pressure on nearby regional referral hubs.

The facility is being delivered through a direct institutional partnership between the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Engineers from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are leading execution on the site, steering the development through its primary structural phases ahead of planned commissioning.

Attention has now shifted toward completing secondary works across the site compound. Current field operations focus on installing dedicated kitchen facilities and laying concrete cabro paving around the primary building and peripheral walkways to establish internal access routes.

State Department for Internal Security and National Administration (SDISNA) Principal Secretary (PS) Dr Raymond Omollo confirmed the structural milestone, noting that national administrative structures are coordinating inter-agency operations to maintain project momentum and ensure a secure working environment through the final setup phase.

Once fully operationalized, the new facility will absorb significant patient traffic currently directed toward the Kiambu Level 5 Hospital and Thika Level 5 Hospital.

Local health administrators anticipate the addition of 350 beds will immediately raise regional inpatient capacity while shortening emergency response times for surrounding communities.

The architectural layout incorporates comprehensive outpatient and inpatient wings alongside specialized medical units.

The complex is configured to house emergency and critical care departments, oncology, orthopaedics, mental health services, and dedicated maternal and child healthcare divisions.

Government planning frameworks align the hospital build with the broader Beyond 2030 development agenda. National policy focuses on modernizing healthcare infrastructure to lower the cost of quality care and expand geographic coverage across sub-counties.

Inter-ministerial coordination continues between technical engineering teams, security administration, and health policy officials to finalize site utility connections and specialized equipment installation.

A precise commissioning date will follow the completion of the remaining external paving and auxiliary service structures.
