Construction of the Mukarara ESP Market in Gichugu has reached the 90 percent mark, with specialized facilities for cold storage and digital commerce now entering the final installation phase.

Construction crews at the Mukarara ESP Market in Gichugu Constituency have entered the final stages of work, with the project now estimated at 90 percent completion.

The facility, situated in Kirinyaga County, is a primary project under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which is a central pillar of the administration led by President Ruto. Site reports indicate that the primary structural elements are finished, leaving only the specialized terrazzo flooring to be installed before the building is handed over.

Designed to accommodate approximately 200 traders, the market deviates from traditional open-air designs by incorporating several modern amenities intended to support long-term business sustainability.

Engineers have included a dedicated cold storage facility within the layout. This addition aims to address the persistent issue of post-harvest losses, allowing farmers to preserve perishable goods and wait for better market prices.

Beyond simple trade stalls, the complex features a social hall, comprehensive sanitation facilities, and an on-site restaurant. A crèche has also been integrated into the design to support lactating mothers who work at the market, which is a rare feature in regional trading centers.

Digital connectivity forms a core component of the project. An on-site ICT hub is being established to provide local youth with training in digital skills and access to emerging e-commerce opportunities.

Infrastructure for the site includes a reliable water supply system and modern waste management protocols. Enhanced lighting has been installed throughout the perimeter and interior to ensure the environment remains functional and safe outside of daylight hours.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is currently coordinating with local leaders in Kirinyaga. This partnership focuses on community engagement to ensure that once the market opens, operations remain orderly and the transition for local traders is seamless.

Economic projections suggest the market will improve income for local farmers by providing a direct link to buyers. During the construction phase, the project has also provided employment for both skilled and unskilled laborers in Gichugu.

The modernization of this trade hub reflects a broader strategy to decentralize economic opportunities. By moving away from basic stalls to integrated facilities, the government intends to create a more resilient trading environment for the residents of Kirinyaga County.
