Civil works at the Ithookwe Airstrip in Kitui County have reached their final phases, signaling an imminent shift in regional logistics and passenger transit. The upgrade focuses on the full reconstruction and modernization of the airfield infrastructure to meet strict aviation guidelines.
A primary component of the project is the newly paved 950-metre asphalt runway, designated as Runway 05/23. Engineering teams completed the grading, compaction, and final surface finishing across its 15-metre width, establishing a durable framework for aircraft operations.
The scope of works extends beyond the runway to include a completely new terminal building. This facility incorporates a Very Important Person (VIP) reception area and dedicated lounges, which are configured to accommodate visiting dignitaries and corporate travellers.
Contractors have also completed crucial supporting infrastructure across the site. A secure perimeter fence has been erected to safeguard the active airside environment, supplemented by a bitumen-standard vehicle parking area and an internal access driveway for ground traffic.
On the airside, teams expanded and marked the apron to improve aircraft maneuverability. This structural expansion allows for more structured ground handling, ensuring safe parking configurations for light fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.
Operational assessments indicate the modernised facility will shorten travel times substantially, reducing flights between Kitui and hubs like Nairobi or Mombasa to approximately 35 minutes. This offers an alternative to the unpredictable transit times associated with the existing road network.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration (SDISNA) has maintained a central oversight role in the implementation and eventual operationalisation of the airstrip. Security management remains a priority focus for the department during this transition.
To manage potential risks, authorities are establishing controlled, closely monitored entry and exit points. This security framework is designed to prevent unauthorised access to the runway and terminal while keeping daily operations moving efficiently.
From a regional planning perspective, the airstrip occupies a strategic position linking Nairobi, Mombasa, Garissa, and Wajir. Local officials expect this connectivity to position Kitui as an accessible gateway for mining investors and emergency medical evaluation services.
The upgraded infrastructure is built to support regular commercial light-aircraft services. By improving access to the South Kitui Game Reserve, the project aims to stimulate hospitality, trade, and broader economic activities within the surrounding local communities.
