The Government of Kenya (GoK) has intensified construction works to complete the expansion of a major referral hospital in Nyandarua County. The J.M. Kariuki Memorial County Referral Hospital is undergoing a major physical upgrade to address local healthcare needs.
Initially a 142-bed facility, the hospital in Ol Kalou Town is being upgraded into a 500-bed mega-hospital, which will expand access to specialized healthcare for residents across the Central region.
The upgrade follows a long period during which the infrastructure project remained stalled, although President William Samoei Ruto intervened in April 2025. He directed a substantial financial injection of KSh 800 million to revitalize the construction works.

To guarantee speed and efficiency, President Ruto assigned the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to take over the remaining construction. The military, operating under the Ministry of Defence (MoD), is supervising the final structural works and civil installations on site.
Currently, about 50 workers are executing finishing works, including external plastering and interior fittings. According to official government communication released on July 15, 2026, the structural frame and the prominent front facade of the hospital building have now been largely completed.
Medical infrastructure upgrades within the main building are progressing rapidly, when workers are not busy with exterior civil works. Key installations will include a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a High Dependency Unit (HDU), and three modern operating theatres.
Furthermore, a modern maternity wing and dedicated utility wards are being built. These facilities will help decongest the existing clinical areas, which have historically faced immense pressure due to high patient numbers from the surrounding agricultural zones.
To support advanced diagnostics, the GoK is procuring specialized equipment. This includes a 160-slice artificial-intelligence-enabled computed tomography scan machine, which will allow local doctors to perform detailed internal imaging.
Named in honour of the late politician Josiah Mwangi Kariuki, the referral facility serves as a lasting tribute to his public service. The completed institution will serve a population of over 700,000 residents within Nyandarua, if staffing targets are fully met.
The local community has welcomed the deployment of military engineers to complete the project, who have brought discipline to the site. Having experienced long queues and limited specialized treatment in the past, residents expect the new 500-bed capacity to shorten waiting times.
Recent photographs from the construction site in Ol Kalou show scaffolding surrounding the multi-storey facility. Workers are actively completing the exterior cladding and structural glazing on the modern front entrance, which features bold orange-trimmed pillars.
The military engineers have prioritized quality control during the civil works phase. Drainage systems, access roads, and secure perimeter fencing are being constructed concurrently with the interior electrical and mechanical installations, but the interior remains the primary focus.
The MoD has emphasized its commitment to delivering the state-of-the-art facility within the scheduled timeframe. Local administrators believe the upgraded referral hospital will minimize the need for patients to travel over three hours to Nairobi for specialized operations.
Sub-county health administrators are already planning the recruitment and redeployment of medical personnel, but it remains a logistical challenge. The expanded capacity will require additional doctors, nurses, and laboratory technologists to manage the complex diagnostics equipment and the expanded ward space.
