National and county governments partner to expand the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium to accommodate up to 20,000 spectators.

The ongoing modernization of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya Town has entered its second phase, with engineering teams scaling up structural operations to handle major regional tournaments.

This multi-billion project is part of a broader national strategy to develop local sporting talent, while preparing Kenya for upcoming international fixtures. Kenya is positioning itself as a premier sporting destination ahead of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Africa Cup of Nations 2027.

The project is executed through a partnership between the national government and the county government. The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is handling the actual construction works on the site, ensuring strict adherence to strict technical design schedules.

The first phase of the development successfully delivered a Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) standard football pitch, VIP pavilions, changing rooms, and basketball courts.

Building on those initial infrastructure gains, the second phase focuses on expanding the spectator capacity, which will increase from the original 5,000 seats to between 15,000 and 20,000 seats. Crews are actively installing massive structural steel columns to support a comprehensive full-roof canopy over the new seating tiers.

The completed facility will feature a standard 110-metre by 68-metre football field, which will be flanked by an eight-lane, 400-metre tartan athletics track. These specific technical dimensions will elevate the venue into a versatile multi-sport complex.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is coordinating national government functions at the county level to support the project. This administrative body manages stakeholder engagement and detailed security planning, ensuring a secure environment for construction laborers and future event crowds.

The stadium is expected to anchor regional athletic talent development programs once the military engineers hand over the completed site. Local football clubs and regional athletics associations will gain access to modern facilities that match international hosting standards.

The infrastructure upgrade coincides with separate sports development initiatives across western Kenya, where several counties are rehabilitating decentralized fields. The national government intends to utilize these venues for pre-tournament training camps during continental championships.

As structural steel columns rise at the Siaya site, project managers remain focused on keeping the works within the scheduled timelines. The inclusion of KDF personnel is aimed at speeding up structural delivery while containing operational costs.

The facility represents a massive structural shift for Siaya Town, which previously lacked an international-standard sporting venue. The final integration of the tartan track and full-roof canopy will conclude the main structural works under the Phase II contract.
