Nairobi-Nyahururu train derails near Ol Kalou station

A Nairobi-Nyahururu passenger train derailed at Ol Kalou town on Tuesday evening, 18 August 2026. Two wheels of one of the coaches slightly came off the railway track near the Ol Kalou Railway Station.

The incident caused a brief scare among passengers. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Witnesses said the train had been travelling along the Nairobi-Nyahururu route when part of the coach left the track. Images and videos showed several wagons of the passenger train slightly off the main railway line, with the incident occurring close to the station.

Residents milled around the scene following the derailment. Some recorded videos and took pictures near the train as efforts continued to establish what had happened.

The Kenya Railways Corporation had not issued a statement on the circumstances surrounding the incident by the time of publication.

The Nairobi-Nyahururu passenger service was revived earlier this year, restoring train services along the route.

Train derailments involving passenger services remain relatively uncommon, though past incidents have caused serious disruption and, in some cases, injuries.
