Murang'a's Modern Kambirwa ESP Market Nears Completion as New Features Revealed

Work on the Kambirwa ESP Market in Kiharu Constituency is nearing the finish line, with the structure now 98 percent complete. The project represents a specific shift toward modernizing grassroots trade in Murang'a County, moving away from informal roadside selling toward a structured environment.

The two-storey building is part of a wider effort to provide sustainable infrastructure for small enterprises. During the building phase, the site provided daily wages for the locals, including many women and youth, which helped support households in the immediate area.

Once fully operational, the facility will accommodate hundreds of traders. Unlike traditional open-air markets, the Kambirwa site includes specialized storage solutions to address long-standing issues with food waste. It is equipped with cold storage units to preserve perishable produce and dry storage specifically for cereals.

The design also accounts for social needs that are often overlooked in commercial spaces. The interior includes a dedicated breastfeeding room, a children's play area, and a social hall. These additions target the specific challenges faced by women traders who often have to balance childcare with their business hours.

To bridge the digital gap, the market houses an ICT hub. This center is intended to improve digital literacy among the locals and provide a gateway for e-commerce, allowing traders to move beyond physical foot traffic. Accessibility has also been prioritized through the installation of disability-friendly ramps throughout the structure.

Sanitation and utility management form the backbone of the new ecosystem. The site features modern toilets, a reliable water supply, and an organized system for waste management to maintain a clean trading environment.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has maintained a presence on the ground. This involvement ensures that the project aligns with local administrative structures and that security protocols are established before the official handover.

This development in Kiharu is expected to strengthen local value chains by providing a central collection and sale point. By anchoring commerce in a permanent, secure building, the county aims to transform the economic landscape for small-scale entrepreneurs in the region.
