The multi-storey South B Modern Market infrastructure project has entered its final phases of construction, according to information shared by the Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo.
The new retail structure is situated three kilometres from Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD).
The multi-storey trading facility is accessible via Mombasa Road, Lusica Road, and Jogoo Road.
The development replaces unsafe roadside trading, offering structured urban infrastructure to local vendors who previously worked along transport corridors.
The permanent trading facility will accommodate approximately 1,050 permanent traders, with operational capacity rising to nearly 1,500 people during peak market days.
The structural layout designates specific zones for various types of retail activity. The ground floor accommodates grocery vendors, while the first floor houses secondhand clothes traders, locally known as mitumba traders.
Upper levels of the building feature additional retail stalls and a dedicated restaurant area.
Beyond retail spaces, the facility integrates social and welfare amenities. These include a crèche for nursing mothers, an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) hub, a health room, cold storage facilities, and a social hall.
The multi-storey market project is intended to stimulate local enterprise, support retail logistics, and improve transport and food service sectors upon its full completion.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration remains engaged with local leadership and traders' associations to manage the transition from informal roadside spaces into the new facility.
