The State Department for Housing and Urban Development has commenced the construction of the Nyambera Modern Market in Kisii, a project designed to provide permanent trading stalls and sanitation facilities.

The construction of the Nyambera Modern Market in Kisii County has officially moved into the implementation phase following the formal laying of the foundation stone. This development follows a procurement process initiated by the State Department for Housing, Urban Development and Public Works late in 2024. The project is part of a broader national government initiative to upgrade market infrastructure across Kenya, aimed at transitioning small-scale traders from informal roadside settings into regulated, purpose-built facilities.

Situated within Kisii, the Nyambera market is designed to alleviate the congestion that has historically characterized the town's trading hubs. The scope of the work includes the assembly of modern trading stalls, the installation of comprehensive water and sanitation systems, and the development of supporting infrastructure such as drainage canals and access pavements. These features are intended to improve the operational environment for thousands of "mama mbogas" and other small-scale entrepreneurs who currently operate in open-air spaces vulnerable to weather disruptions.

The project aligns with the Kisii County Government’s medium-term development plans, which prioritize the completion of ongoing markets and the improvement of backstreets and drainage systems. For the 2024/2025 financial year, the county’s trade department received an appropriation of over 435 million shillings, with a significant portion of the development budget directed toward the completion of market infrastructure and industrial parks. This localized funding complements the national government’s direct investment in the Nyambera facility, highlighting a collaborative approach to urban renewal.

Beyond the primary stalls, the facility will incorporate administrative offices and waste management systems to ensure long-term sustainability. The technical specifications outlined in the tender documents also emphasize the construction of boundary walls and a ring road to manage traffic flow around the site. These additions are critical for a high-density area like Nyambera, where logistics and security have previously posed challenges for local traders.

Construction is expected to proceed under the supervision of the State Department of Housing, which has been overseeing similar modern market builds in other counties, including Samburu and Laikipia. The government’s strategy focuses on creating specialized zones for different types of produce, which helps in maintaining hygiene standards particularly for fresh food vendors. By providing a centralized location with proper lighting and security, the market is expected to extend trading hours and provide a safer environment for both sellers and buyers.

Local leaders in Kisii have consistently advocated for the modernization of trading spaces to accommodate the growing population and the increasing volume of agricultural produce from the surrounding regions. The Nyambera project follows the successful commissioning of other facilities in the county, such as the Daraja Mbili and Nyakoe markets, which served as blueprints for this current expansion. As the foundation works conclude, the focus will shift to the structural assembly of the main sheds and the installation of the specialized utility services required for a modern commercial hub.
