New Nyeri Market and Transport Hub to Decongest Central Business District

Construction of the Field Marshal Muthoni Kirima Modern Market in Nyeri Town has concluded, introducing a massive multi-modal facility intended to overhaul the local trading and transport environment. Developed under the Kenya Urban Support Programme, the project integrates commercial spaces with essential public transport infrastructure to address longstanding congestion issues within the town’s central business district.

The ultra-modern facility comprises more than 1,000 individual trading stalls alongside an expansive open-air market section. Designed with a specific focus on uplifting ordinary Wananchi, the market provides a dignified environment for women traders who form the backbone of the local economy. The architecture prioritizes structured commerce, moving away from the informal setups that previously defined the area.

A critical component of the development is the well-organized transport terminus. The hub includes dedicated bays for matatus, buses, taxis, and tuk-tuks, aimed at centralizing public transport services. This integration is expected to improve mobility for commuters while providing traders with a consistent flow of foot traffic. Passenger comfort is addressed through the inclusion of dedicated waiting areas and restaurants.

Beyond trade and transport, the facility is equipped with essential utility infrastructure. This includes modern sanitation facilities, water storage systems, and a specialized solid waste management unit to maintain hygiene standards. To support 24-hour operations and modern business needs, the government has installed enhanced security lighting and provided provisions for ICT access and connectivity.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is tasked with maintaining order and safety within the facility. This oversight aims to ensure a secure environment for both service providers and the public, effectively managing what has traditionally been a chaotic transport and trading space. By creating a structured environment, the department hopes to foster new economic opportunities for service providers in the region.

Interior Permanent Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo noted that the project serves as a lasting investment to honour Kenyan heroines by empowering future generations. The market bears the name of legendary freedom fighter Field Marshal Muthoni Kirima, symbolizing a bridge between the country's liberation history and its modern economic aspirations. The locals expect the new hub to significantly reduce the time spent in traffic while providing a safer, cleaner marketplace.
