Wajir Stadium hits 90% completion as National Celebrations Committee takes custody of the 10,000-seater venue from Sports CS Salim Mvurya ahead of Madaraka Day.

The National Celebrations Committee has officially taken control of Wajir Stadium, following an on-site handover by government officials who confirmed the infrastructure asset has achieved 90 per cent completion.

Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya led the inspection team at the facility in Wajir town, assessing the structural readiness of the venue before national celebrations commence on June 1.

The Sh900 million project features a full-sized football pitch, an eight-lane athletics track, VIP lounges, changing rooms, and modern spectator stands designed to host major events in the region.

Workmen remain on-site to execute the remaining finishes, but engineers cleared the primary arena for active use by the state planning teams and the military.

According to Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, the project underpins a broader regional integration agenda spearheaded by President Ruto, who prioritised the infrastructure to decentralise national holiday events.

The stadium represents a substantial shift in public work distribution, bringing a large-capacity civic facility to a region that historically lacked modern sports infrastructure.

National planners indicate that contractors will return to the site immediately after the public holiday concluded, completing outstanding ancillary works to align the stadium with long-term talent development plans.

Local leadership, including Wajir County Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, joined the touring delegation, noting that the completed infrastructure provides a concrete platform for future commercial, sporting, and tourism activities.

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have been supervising the fast-tracked construction timeline, utilizing local labour streams to ensure immediate economic benefits directly reached the surrounding community during execution.

With military personnel already conducting daily parade drills on the pitch, the site has transitioned from an active civilian construction zone into a secured state venue.

Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed that the delivery of the main pavilion and the sports surfaces satisfies the immediate technical requirements for the national assembly, ensuring the venue functions safely at capacity.
