The government has approved an additional KSh16.6 billion to complete the flagship Mwache Multipurpose Dam Project in Kwale. The funding will help unlock one of Kenyaβs largest water infrastructure investments.
Once complete, the dam will supply 186,000 cubic metres of water daily to Mombasa and Kwale counties. This is expected to ease chronic water shortages, support households and industry, expand irrigation and strengthen climate resilience.
The Mwache Dam is designed as a multipurpose facility. It will provide reliable water for domestic use, industrial needs and agricultural development in the coastal region.
The project has faced delays in the past. The latest funding injection is intended to accelerate completion and ensure the dam becomes operational as planned.
Mombasa and Kwale have long struggled with water supply challenges. The new dam is seen as a game-changer for the regionβs water security and economic growth.
The cabinet decision reflects the governmentβs priority on strategic infrastructure to support population growth and development needs along the coast.
The Mwache Dam is part of broader efforts to harness water resources for multiple uses, including potential hydropower generation in the future.
Local communities are expected to benefit from improved water access and associated economic opportunities during and after construction.
