KCAA faced with operational decisions as wilson airport runway upgrade awaits full use

Aviation operators and industry stakeholders are closely monitoring regulatory actions by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) as Nairobi's Wilson Airport awaits full operationalization of its newly upgraded main runway.

Night flights are yet to resume on the revamped main runway, limiting the facility from operating at full capacity during dark hours. The restriction continues to affect air operators who rely on nighttime arrivals and departures at the busy regional hub.

Infrastructure upgrades on the primary runway were completed to improve structural integrity, landing surface quality, and general safety standards for aircraft. However, the suspension of night movements remains in place pending final regulatory clearances, inspection compliance, and operational approvals from the aviation authority.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) carries the mandate to inspect, certify, and grant full clearance for flight operations across all public airfields in Kenya.

Until the regulator issues full clearance, flight schedules at Wilson Airport remain restricted to daytime operations on the revamped section.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), which manages the airport's physical infrastructure, has been coordinating with aviation regulators to satisfy safety standards and technical requirements needed for nighttime flight resumption.

The facility serves as a vital hub for domestic airlines, private charter operators, medical evacuations, and safari flights across East Africa.

Industry players note that full operationalization of the upgraded runway is critical to easing daytime congestion and allowing air operators to maximize fleet utilization.
