Kenya National Highways Authority Completes Key Road Upgrade in Makueni and Kitui

The Kibwezi–Mutomo–Kitui–Kabati–Migwani Road, stretching approximately 192 kilometers across Makueni and Kitui counties, is a key transport corridor that has significantly improved connectivity in southeastern Kenya. This road forms part of a broader national initiative aimed at upgrading major roads to facilitate trade, reduce travel time and enhance access to essential services. Construction began around 2017 under a contract set for approximately 42 months. However, the project faced delays primarily due to funding challenges, which slowed progress and extended the timeline for completion. Despite these setbacks, work has continued in phases, with periodic allocations from the national Treasury ensuring steady advancement. The phased approach allowed certain sections of the road to be completed and opened for use while work continued on remaining segments, gradually improving access for communities along the corridor.
