President Ruto Directive Triggers Construction Preparations at Maua Stadium

A delegation led by Dr Patrick Mariru, the Principal Secretary (PS) for Defence, visited the site of the proposed Maua Stadium in Meru County to assess the grounds before construction equipment moves in.

The inspection follows an executive directive issued by President Dr William Ruto, who ordered the immediate prioritization of the sporting facility.

Local leaders and residents have long petitioned for the upgrade of the grounds, which have historically suffered from poor drainage and dilapidated boundary walls.

During the morning site visit, Dr Mariru indicated that the preliminary structural assessments are being finalized to prevent further delays.

Engineers from the Ministry of Defence (MOD) accompanied the administrative team to map out the boundary lines and evaluate the soil topography.

Maua town, situated near the Nyambene hills, requires a modern stadium to support local athletes and host regional athletic events.

For years, the facility remained in a state of disrepair, with livestock frequently grazing on the main playing field during the dry seasons.

Heavy rains regularly turned the pitch into an unusable wetland, hindering local sports talent and disrupting scheduled community activities.

The upcoming project aims to address these structural challenges by introducing professional grading, modern drainage systems, and secure perimeter fencing.

Security teams will also be deployed to secure the site during the active phase of the multi-month infrastructure development.

County officials from Meru joined the national delegation, promising full cooperation during the excavation and construction phases of the project.

The regional administration expects the facility to improve sports tourism in the region once the grandstands and running tracks are completed.

Contractors are expected to prioritize local labor for the earthworks, providing immediate casual employment to the youth within Igembe region.

A detailed layout of the stadium pavilions, changing rooms, and parking zones has already been reviewed by the planning committee.

The project timeline remains strict, with the engineering teams expected to submit progress updates directly to the executive office weekly.

Dr Mariru emphasized that the government is committed to executing the project within the stipulated budget allocations.
