The long-overdue renovation and upgrade of Ruring’u Stadium in Nyeri County has finally regained full momentum, breathing new life into one of Mt. Kenya’s most treasured sports facilities.
The project was initiated in 2014 under former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, as part of the national plan to modernize key regional sporting grounds. However, construction stalled for years due to funding challenges and contractor delays, leaving the once-promising facility incomplete and idle.
Now, under the leadership of President William Ruto’s government, the project has been revived and is progressing at an impressive pace. The Ministry of Youth Affairs, the Arts and Sports, through the Sports Kenya agency, is overseeing the works, with renewed energy and efficiency aimed at delivering a modern, world-class stadium.
Valued at approximately KSh 650 million upon completion, the upgrade includes the construction of modern terraces, installation of a stylish canopy, and laying of a high-quality tartan running track to meet international standards.
The project has also become a source of hope and empowerment for the local community, creating jobs and skills training opportunities for Nyeri’s youth, particularly those engaged in construction and support work.
Once complete, the revamped Ruring’u Stadium will stand as a vibrant hub for sports development across the Mt. Kenya region. It will provide young athletes with a professional platform to train and compete, while also attracting major tournaments that will boost the county’s economy.
The Ruring’u Stadium upgrade represents renewed faith in youth potential, community pride, and regional growth, a symbol of what consistency and collaboration can achieve in delivering Kenya’s sporting vision.
