Engineers altered the alignment of a major electricity interconnector in Wales following hundreds of public calls regarding a movie site.

Developers of the 430 million pound Greenlink subsea electricity cable altered the project route to avoid an unofficial memorial site in Wales. Project managers confirmed the decision followed hundreds of public inquiries regarding the coastal alignment.

The 190-kilometer energy connection links the National Grid (NG) infrastructure in Pembrokeshire with the Irish electricity network at Great Island in County Wexford. It transmits up to 500 megawatts of power beneath the Irish Sea.

Engineers initially planned for the cable to make landfall at Freshwater West beach. The coastal location served as the filming site for the fictional character Dobby the House Elf in the movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Following a broadcast interview about the cable alignment, fans noticed the path crossed the dune area. Local permits officers subsequently received calls claiming the alignment would pass directly through the informal shrine.

Former project director Simon Ludlam acknowledged that initial plans did not account for the cultural sensitivity of the location. Project planners met shortly afterward to adjust the alignment away from the site.

Contractors utilized Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) techniques to lay the high-voltage cables beneath the beach and sand dunes. The non-open trenching methodology ensured no permanent surface structures were constructed along the shore.

The installation included two high-voltage direct current power cables alongside a dedicated fiber-optic link. These subsea lines enable bidirectional energy sharing between the UK and Irish national power grids.

During preliminary ground investigations, archaeological teams uncovered an inverted Bronze Age collared urn dating back to roughly 1500 BC. The ancient vessel was discovered in close proximity to the revised cable corridor.

Ludlam noted the irony that the energy link passed near genuine ancient human remains, but was diverted to protect a fictional marker. The project team successfully executed the rerouting without altering the overall completion schedule.

The Greenlink subsea interconnector officially began commercial operation, carrying electricity between Wales and Ireland. The project represents one of several major subsea interconnectors constructed across European waters to strengthen grid reliability.

Managing environmental and public concerns along coastal cable landfalls remains a routine challenge for major infrastructure teams. Similar ecological considerations recently prompted High-Speed Two (HS2) rail planners to design specialized tunnels for protected bat species.

The coastal site at Freshwater West is managed by the National Trust (NT), which conducted a formal public review regarding visitor impact. Conservation officials asked visitors to stop leaving physical items such as socks and painted stones in the dunes.

Despite the high volume of beach visitors, environmental managers permitted the memorial to remain in place temporarily. Authorities encouraged fans to take photographs rather than leaving objects that could enter the marine environment, if they wished to visit.

Subsea cable landfalls routinely require complex engineering solutions to minimize ecological footprint and community impact. By deploying underground drilling methods, contractors preserved both the coastal landscape and the surrounding heritage sites.

The completed interconnector now operates fully underground where it crosses the Welsh coastline toward the inland substation. Both the subsea power infrastructure and the beach memorial remain separated beneath the Pembrokeshire shore.

The project demonstrates how modern utility developments must navigate complex social and environmental landscapes. Careful stakeholder management ensured that critical energy transmission goals were met without alienating local visitors or cultural communities.
