Kenya Airports Authority now a PLC as government presses ahead with State corporation reforms

The Kenya Airports Authority has completed its transition into a public limited company, adopting the new name Kenya Airports Authority PLC as part of ongoing reforms targeting state-owned enterprises.

The authority announced the change on Thursday, August 27, 2026, though the underlying legal shift had already taken place months earlier. It said the new corporate structure is expected to strengthen governance and operational performance.

According to the authority, the organisation was incorporated as a public limited company on June 3, 2026, under the Companies Act, 2015. That incorporation followed the repeal of the Kenya Airports Authority Act, Cap. 395, on December 5, 2025, carried out under the Government Owned Enterprises Act, 2025.

In a public notice, KAA said the incorporation gives it a new legal framework to pursue efficiency, innovation and long-term performance in the aviation sector.

"Kenya Airports Authority is pleased to announce a major milestone in its corporate development. The organisation has officially transitioned from Kenya Airports Authority to Kenya Airports Authority PLC," the authority said in its statement.

The move forms part of a broader push by the Government of Kenya to reshape the governance and operations of state corporations, a process that has touched several parastatals in recent years as the state seeks to tighten oversight and improve commercial performance across public enterprises.

KAA said the change would also strengthen its competitiveness and its ability to respond to shifts in the aviation industry. "This transformation aligns with the Government of Kenya's State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) reforms aimed at enhancing governance, accountability, commercial sustainability and operational performance," the authority stated.

KAA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Moses Wekesa said the organisation looked forward to building on the changes as it continues delivering airport services, though he did not elaborate on what operational shifts, if any, would follow the corporate restructuring.

The authority manages and operates Kenya's airports, including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi and Moi International Airport in Mombasa, and plays a central role in the country's aviation infrastructure. Despite adopting the new corporate status, KAA said it remained committed to its core mandate.

"As Kenya Airports Authority PLC, we remain dedicated to delivering safe, secure, efficient, and sustainable airport operations," the authority said, adding that it would continue strengthening partnerships and supporting growth within the aviation sector.

The transition comes as Kenya continues positioning its aviation sector as a significant driver of economic activity, spanning trade, tourism and regional connectivity. Nairobi's status as an East African aviation hub has made airport infrastructure and governance a recurring focus for policymakers.

The authority's shift from a statutory body to a company incorporated under the Companies Act marks a departure from the framework it had operated under for decades. It is not yet clear whether the change will affect KAA's existing contracts, staffing structure or its relationship with the national government as sole shareholder, details the authority did not address in Thursday's notice.
