Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed to international allies for the urgent delivery of interceptor missiles, following a series of intense Russian ballistic missile attacks on the capital city of Kyiv, Ukraine.
The appeal comes ahead of a crucial North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit being held in Ankara, Turkey. Zelensky stated that decisions regarding air defence must be a primary outcome of these diplomatic meetings.
Recent Russian bombardments have caused significant destruction in the capital city, striking residential apartment blocks and resulting in the deaths of over 50 civilians in less than a single week.
Kyiv's top military administrator, Timur Tkachenko, confirmed that 46 people, including at least five children, sustained injuries during the recent assaults. The intensity of these strikes has exposed critical gaps in defensive capabilities.
According to official reports from the Ukrainian Air Force, a single recent attack involved 68 missiles and 351 strike drones. While defensive units intercepted the majority of the incoming drones, they failed to stop any of the 23 ballistic missiles aimed at Kyiv.
Military officials attributed this failure to a severe shortage of defensive interceptor missiles. The high speed of ballistic weapons makes them exceptionally difficult to counter without advanced systems, such as United States (US) manufactured Patriot hardware.
In a video address, Zelensky expressed deep frustration over global production rates. He described the situation as completely absurd, noting that manufacturing has not scaled up sufficiently to protect populations from ongoing ballistic terror.
The Ukrainian leader is urging European nations to transfer their stored Patriot missile stockpiles directly to active conflict zones. He argues that maintaining weapons in storage facilities serves no practical purpose, when civilians continue to face aerial bombardment.
In addition to requesting direct shipments, Kyiv is seeking manufacturing licences from the US administration. These agreements would allow Ukraine to establish domestic production lines for advanced air defence components, if international technical assistance is granted.
The diplomatic push coincides with increased Ukrainian long-range drone operations inside Russian territory. Overnight, approximately 430 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) were directed towards Moscow, causing power outages and substantial fuel shortages across several regions.
Russian social media platforms have reported long queues at petrol stations, but official sources downplayed the disruption. Similar infrastructural damage has been reported in Crimea, where daily drone strikes have targeted military logistics, oil refineries, and power stations.
Local residents in the Crimean peninsula have described the local situation as catastrophic, comparing the current power blackouts and food shortages directly to the turbulent economic collapse of the 1990s.
Zelensky plans to use the summit in Turkey to hold a critical meeting with Donald Trump. The Ukrainian delegation aims to demonstrate that Moscow relies on ballistic weapons out of operational weakness, although the Kremlin continues to project military dominance.
The primary goal of the diplomatic campaign is to leverage battlefield pressure to force Russian President Vladimir Putin into negotiations. Kyiv maintains that any future peace agreement must protect its territorial integrity, but Moscow still demands the surrender of the entire eastern Donbas region.
