Miraa Driver Dies in Fatal Mwea Lorry Collision

A 28-year-old driver transporting khat, locally known as miraa, lost his life while two passengers suffered severe injuries following a head-on collision near Mutithi Trading Centre along the busy Mwea-Embu Highway in Kirinyaga County.

The crash involved a station wagon carrying the cash crop towards Nairobi from Meru and a heavy tipper lorry loaded with sand heading toward Ngurubani. According to witnesses, the incident occurred after a motorcycle swerved in front of the oncoming traffic.

The high-speed impact caused the smaller vehicle to roll several times into a neighbouring rice field. Meanwhile, the sand truck caught fire shortly after impact, sending thick plumes of smoke over surrounding farmlands.

Local agricultural workers in the adjacent fields witnessed the fiery collision. Bystanders noted that the truck driver and his turn-boy managed to escape the burning cab with minor physical injuries.

Emergency responses were quickly organized by local police and emergency workers. The Kirinyaga County Government dispatched a clean-water bowser to extinguish the flames consuming the heavy truck.

The surviving occupants, aged 33 and 29, were rushed to a local private hospital along with the driver. Medical staff confirmed that the young driver succumbed to his injuries during emergency treatment.

The two surviving passengers remain under medical care with serious fractures to their legs and head trauma. Officers from the National Police Service (NPS) arrived at the scene to clear the wreckage.

Police impounded the burnt truck and crushed station wagon, towing both vehicles to Wang'uru Police Station for inspection. The body of the deceased was subsequently moved to Kerugoya Hospital mortuary.

The crash happened just hours after the community gathered at Karoti Girls High School for a joint funeral service honoring 10 victims killed in another road crash at Murubara. That previous accident involved a commercial delivery truck, a three-wheeled tuk-tuk, and several pedestrians along the same corridor.

Residents expressed growing concerns over infrastructure conditions along the regional highway, calling for structural road upgrades from state agencies like the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).

Demands include installing speed humps, repairing potholes, and expanding the single-carriageway into a dual-carriageway format.

Community members emphasized that the busy highway handles heavy transit across five counties, making structural safety improvements essential.
