Finally, the long-awaited 66km Ngong-Suswa Highway is officially open, marking the completion of a key infrastructure project that began in 2017 under the leadership of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Launched as part of the national plan to expand and modernize road networks around Nairobi, the project aimed to ease movement between Kajiado, Narok, and the broader Rift Valley region.
Reports from the implementation period estimate the cost at about KSh 6-7 billion, covering construction, upgrading, bridges, and safety improvements.
The new highway offers a smoother, safer and more direct escape from Nairobi through Ngong, replacing previously rough and narrow sections that caused delays and increased vehicle wear.
With improved alignment, better drainage, modern signage and high-quality surfacing, motorists now enjoy a comfortable journey that significantly cuts travel time toward Suswa, Narok and the Maasai Mara region.
One of the highway’s biggest advantages is its scenic stretch across the Rift Valley escarpment, making it not only a functional transport corridor but also an attractive route for road-trip lovers and tourists.
Travelers can now experience the dramatic landscapes of Kajiado and Narok counties without the struggle of uneven or unsafe roads, opening new tourism possibilities along the route.
For transporters and businesses, the Ngong-Suswa Highway is a game-changer. Faster and more reliable movement of goods means lower operational costs and better market access for farmers, traders, and suppliers in the region. Small trading centers along the corridor are expected to grow as improved mobility attracts new investments, boosts local commerce, and strengthens the economic link between rural and urban areas.
With its official opening, the Ngong-Suswa Highway stands as another milestone in Kenya’s ongoing infrastructure transformation. It strengthens regional connectivity, supports tourism, enhances safety, and unlocks fresh opportunities for communities.
The completion of this project shows how effective infrastructure can reshape livelihoods, bringing development closer and making travel easier for thousands of Kenyans every day.
