The University of Nairobi (UoN) Council has officially appointed Professor Ayub Njoroge Gitau as the new Vice-Chancellor (VC).
This decision concludes a recruitment process overseen by the Public Service Commission (PSC) and the university’s governing body.
Amukowa Anangwe, the UoN Council Chairperson, confirmed the appointment in a statement issued on Friday.
Professor Gitau, who previously served as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, emerges as the successor to Professor Stephen Kiama.
The transition follows a period of administrative shifts and leadership changes within the country’s premier institution of higher learning.
According to the Council, the recruitment was a rigorous exercise intended to find a candidate capable of navigating the complex operational and academic needs of the university.
Gitau was among several high-ranking academics shortlisted for the position earlier this year.
His background in Agricultural Engineering and extensive experience within the university’s internal structures provided him with a competitive edge during the interviews.
The appointment comes at a time when Kenyan universities are facing significant financial and structural reforms.
The Ministry of Education (MoE) has been advocating for stable leadership at the top of public universities to implement the New Funding Model (NFM).
Gitau’s tenure is expected to focus on institutional stability and the enhancement of research capabilities across various faculties.
The former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kiama, had been at the center of several administrative discussions regarding his contract and leave before the Council initiated the search for a permanent replacement.
Professor Gitau has a long-standing career in academia, having held various positions of responsibility within the University of Nairobi (UoN) for over two decades.
His colleagues describe him as a methodical administrator with a deep understanding of the technical and social dynamics of the campus.
Public Service Commission (PSC) officials noted that the vetting process included a thorough review of the candidates’ academic records, management experience, and integrity.
The Council has expressed confidence that the new leadership will foster a collaborative environment between the management and the student body.
In his role as Dean, Gitau was instrumental in managing the Faculty of Engineering, which is one of the most resource-intensive departments at the university.
His experience there is seen as a vital asset, although he now faces the broader challenge of managing a diverse institution with thousands of staff and students.
The University of Nairobi (UoN) remains a focal point for national academic excellence, often acting as a barometer for the state of higher education in the region.
Stakeholders, including the University's Academic Staff Union (UASU), have monitored the recruitment process closely, emphasizing the need for transparency in the selection of the Vice-Chancellor (VC).
With the formal announcement now made, the focus shifts to the official installation ceremony and the priorities Gitau will set for his first term.
His leadership will be tested by the ongoing demands for infrastructure upgrades and the integration of digital learning tools in a post-pandemic academic landscape.
The UoN Council thanked the acting leadership for maintaining operations during the transition period and urged the university community to support the incoming Vice-Chancellor (VC).
Further details regarding the handover process are expected to be released by the university administration in the coming days.
