Women in Real Estate (WIRE) held a partnership meeting with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) on Tuesday, 11 August 2026. The meeting explored opportunities for collaboration on more inclusive and gender responsive infrastructure development.
The organisation was represented by President Rachel Patience Mulondo, board members Ann Omufira and Wambui Gaitha, acting chief executive Sarahrose Aketch, and research and advocacy officer Esther Wanjiku.
They presented a collaboration proposal focused on contributing a gender responsive planning perspective to the design of roadside stations and other supporting infrastructure.
The proposal reaffirms the organisationβs commitment to a built environment that is inclusive, safe and responsive to the needs of all users. It also seeks to demonstrate the value of integrating gender considerations into infrastructure planning and development.
Women in Real Estate said it appreciated the opportunity to engage with the Kenya National Highways Authority and looked forward to continued engagement with the authority.
Roadside stations form part of the supporting infrastructure along national highways. Gender responsive planning in this context looks at how such facilities serve different users, including women, children and other groups who may have specific safety or accessibility needs.
The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts by professional associations to engage public agencies on how infrastructure design can better reflect the requirements of the full range of road users.
With legislation recently passed on requirements for pedestrian walkways and cycling lanes, more advocacy is certainly required as the country moves towards designs that truly accommodate all users.
No further details on the next steps or formal agreements were provided following the meeting.
