What on Earth? Couple Robbed and Assaulted After Vehicle Plunges Off Road at Kikuyu Junction

A couple suffered robbery and sexual assault after their vehicle left the road in Kikuyu Sub County early Thursday morning. The incident started as a traffic accident but quickly turned violent at the KARLO Forest Renguti Junction in the Kerwa area.

The event occurred around 5:30 a.m. The pair was driving home when the driver lost control. Their car veered off the road and landed in a ditch on a nearby farm according to police at Kikuyu Police Station.

Two unidentified men approached the stranded couple. They pretended to offer assistance at first. The suspects then brandished knives and turned the encounter into a robbery.

The attackers took the victims mobile phones. They forced the couple to reveal their M Pesa PINs. The suspects withdrew an undisclosed amount of money from the mobile wallets before fleeing the scene.

During the assault one of the victims was subjected to gang rape. Both the man and woman sustained injuries in the attack. Members of the public later rescued the couple and rushed them to P.C.E.A. Kikuyu Hospital for treatment.

Detectives from Kikuyu Sub County Criminal Investigations Officer led a team to the scene. They included the Officer in Charge of Crime, traffic officers and Crime Scene Investigators from Kiambu. The group processed the area on Thursday.

Investigators recovered several empty alcohol bottles from inside the crashed vehicle. Police retained the bottles as exhibits. Efforts to identify, trace and arrest the two suspects remain ongoing.

The KARLO Forest Renguti Junction lies in a rural stretch of road. Such locations often lack adequate lighting or guardrails that could prevent vehicles from leaving the carriageway. The accident highlights ongoing challenges with roadside safety in parts of Kiambu County.

Empty alcohol bottles found at the scene raise questions about impaired driving. Kenyan roads see frequent crashes linked to alcohol consumption especially during early morning hours. Authorities regularly urge motorists to avoid drink driving but enforcement remains a persistent issue.
