A family in Kamandura is mourning after one twin brother was killed and the other seriously injured in an accident along the Kamandura-Rironi Road, part of the wider Mau Summit road project.

The two schoolboys were walking home from school when they were knocked down by a road grader operating at the construction site. Eyewitnesses said the machine suffered brake failure before it struck the children.

The younger twin died at the scene. His brother sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Kikuyu Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.

Area leaders have blamed the contractor for failing to put adequate safety measures in place at the site. They are calling for warning signs, deployed traffic marshals and proper management of both motorists and pedestrians using the road while construction continues.

The body of the deceased twin was taken to Tigoni Hospital Mortuary as police opened investigations to establish the cause of the accident.

The Kamandura-Rironi Road forms part of the larger Rironi-Mau Summit highway upgrade, which is the biggest and most monitored road project currently in Kenya.
