The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has joined forces with the County Government of Mombasa (CGM) to review, enhance, and fast-track construction works at the 15,000-seater Mombasa Stadium.
The project currently stands at 30 percent completion, following an inspection conducted by Defence Principal Secretary Dr. Patrick Mariru during an official visit to development sites in the coastal city.
Accompanied by Mombasa County Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir and a joint delegation of local and national officials, Dr. Patrick Mariru assessed the stadium structure, where steel frame installation and concrete terracing are actively underway.
The intervention by defense officials follows a direct directive issued by President William Samoei Ruto, aimed at revitalizing infrastructure development that originally began under county administration over nine years ago.
Initial construction on the facility was launched by the County Government of Mombasa in 2015. However, progress faced prolonged delays over the subsequent years, which left key structural phases incomplete and necessitated national government intervention.
Under the updated collaboration model, technical teams from the Ministry of Defence are working directly alongside county technical staff to modify the existing architecture and expedite site works to ensure modern standards are met.
Upon final completion, the facility will feature enhanced infrastructure intended to host professional football matches along with major domestic and regional sporting competitions.
In addition to hosting conventional athletic fixtures, officials state that the upgraded stadium complex is designed to double as a specialized low-altitude training centre for professional athletes preparing for competition.
Regional authorities expect the completed arena to support local sports talent development, create youth empowerment opportunities, and stimulate sports tourism across Mombasa and the surrounding Coast Region.
The ongoing construction features blue steel roof trusses, concrete spectator stands, and peripheral earthworks, all being adjusted to conform to the newly expanded engineering plans.
Local leadership confirmed that project supervisors are monitoring weekly progress, while joint teams ensure that revised structural enhancements proceed without further delays to final handover timelines.
As site activities intensify, joint technical reviews continue to evaluate structural integrity, seating installation, and drainage layouts required for full operational capacity.
