Civil works for the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) National System Control Centre (NSCC) at the Embakasi Substation in Nairobi County have reached 30 percent completion.
State Department for Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira confirmed the progress following an inspection of the site. The project remains on schedule for completion by February 8, 2028.
The facility is being constructed to serve as the primary operational hub for managing the country’s high-voltage power transmission network. Once operational, the NSCC will monitor and control the flow of electricity across the national grid to manage power balance and system operations.
The new facility is intended to improve the overall stability, reliability, and resilience of the national power network. State officials noted that the facility will also expand local capacity to manage cross-border power flows within the increasingly integrated East African regional electricity network.
Energy sector infrastructure developments in Kenya have increasingly focused on strengthening grid management systems alongside generation capacity expansion. The establishment of the modern system control centre forms part of broader investments aimed at modernising national electrical transmission facilities.
The Embakasi site was selected for the facility due to its position within the existing high-voltage transmission network serving the Nairobi metropolitan region and connecting to major regional transmission lines. Civil construction activities currently underway include structural works and foundational infrastructure needed to host the control systems and monitoring equipment.
Upon completion of the civil phase, contractors will proceed with the installation of specialized power management software, telecommunications systems, and real-time monitoring technology required for grid supervision.
The project represents a long-term capital investment in the state energy infrastructure framework, designed to support modern grid operations and accommodate future additions of renewable energy sources to the national power matrix.
Government officials maintain that the construction timeline remains aligned with target dates established at the commencement of the project. Further technical installations are scheduled to follow as the structural phases conclude over the coming years.
