China sets world record with 15,947 drones in synchronized display

Nearly 16,000 unmanned aerial vehicles illuminated the night sky, securing two new Guinness World Records during a single show.

A massive fleet of 15,947 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) took to the sky simultaneously over Liuyang, establishing a world record for the largest synchronized light performance driven by a single computer system.

The aerial display took place during the 17th Liuyang Fireworks Cultural Festival. Technical operators managed the entire fleet, surpassing the previous record of 10,197 units set in September 2024 by Shenzhen DAMODA Intelligent Control Technology.

Guinness World Records adjudicators officially verified two separate world records during the event. The first record was achieved for the highest number of aircraft controlled simultaneously from a single computer terminal.

The second record was awarded for launching 7,496 fireworks simultaneously from the airborne fleet, marking the largest pyrotechnic payload delivered via coordinated multi-rotor systems.

Shenzhen Gaoju Innovation led the technical execution of the flight program in coordination with local pyrotechnic technicians.

The performance involved pre-programmed automated paths using Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning and mesh networking to maintain precise spatial distribution. High-frequency telemetry updates enabled centimetre-level positioning accuracy across the formation.

The formation created various shapes in the night sky, including glowing blossoms, towers, double-helix structures, and a central tree pattern. The integrated software system achieved millisecond-level precision to synchronize the light arrays with individual pyrotechnic bursts.

Despite the success of the performance, safety concerns regarding large-scale automated deployments remain an ongoing topic within the sector.

A separate light show held in the same municipality weeks earlier experienced technical failures, which resulted in several units catching fire and falling mid-flight.

The technical protocols demonstrated during the spectacle highlight the continued expansion of automated swarm logistics and software-driven positioning systems.

Industry analysts monitor these technical developments due to their broader applications in commercial airspace management, coordinated aerial monitoring, and defense operations.
